There's definitely an audience out there for these low-risk-high-reward Screen Gems thrillers, like The Perfect Guy, Obsessed, and even a story as unpleasant as No Good Deed. These sorts of films tend to live up to moviegoer's expectations, whether they're high or low. The trailer is pretty much what one expects. Here's the When the Bough Breaks trailer (source: EW): Actually, scratch that, because the movie actually looks quite a bit like Curtis Hanson's darkly fun '90s thriller. Cassar is taking on very different material with When the Bough Breaks, which has a slight The Hand That Rocks the Cradle vibe to it. The director's last feature film, Forsaken, was a Western starring Kiefer and Donald Sutherland. Cassar has primarily worked in television, having directed episodes for 24, Nikita, Fringe, and more. Their newest thriller, When the Bough Breaks, is both executive produced by and stars Chestnut. Understandably, the studio wants this collaboration to keep going. Back in 2014, the actor signed a three-picture deal with Sony's Screen Gems. Their last picture headlined by Chestnut, The Perfect Guy, made close to $60 million at the box office, which isn't too shabby for a movie that cost $12 million. The final scene sees the couple cradling their baby as the police arrive on the scene.Screen Gems likes being in the Morris Chestnut business. When The Bough Breaks ends with a very Sleeping With The Enemy inspired final battle that sees Laura finally kill Anna by running her over. When The Bough Breaks' dramatic third act sees Anna learn about their ruse, and she kills their cat and assaults Laura in retaliation before her water breaks.Īnna later gives birth to a boy but quickly checks out of the hospital, but the couple eventually tracks her down to their lake house. When Anna threatens to leave with the baby, Laura and John reluctantly agree he'll do whatever she wants to keep her happy, which includes sleeping with her. John also does some digging into Anna's past and learns she killed her abusive stepfather before changing her name. Mike later confronts Anna once he's released and he wants her to extort John and Laura for more money, but she stabs him to death instead. When he makes it clear nothing will happen between them, she grows furious. Things between the trio are pleasant at first, but Anna grows attracted to John over time, which escalates to sending him spicy videos at work. When The Bough Breaks kicks off when John and Laura deciding to use Anna as a surrogate, though she soon ends up staying with them after she's assaulted by her boyfriend Mike (Theo Rossi). It was also helmed by veteran TV director Jon Cassar, who is perhaps best known for his work on 24. The movie Morris Chestnut as John, Regina King as his wife Laura and Jaz Sinclair as surrogate Anna. When The Bough Breaks belongs to this tradition too and sees a couple trying to get pregnant deciding to use a surrogate, who develops an obsession with the husband. The Invisible Man2020 is something of an update of this formula, with Elizabeth Moss' character fleeing an Ex From Hell who also happens to be able to turn invisible.
